The Artist
For Pei, painting begins with perception and emotion. When feelings gather and deepen, they find their way onto the canvas through colour, movement, and form.Originally from Shanghai, China, Pei grew up beside winding canals and waterways. After settling in Australia, she found new inspiration in the majestic landscapes of Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges. The changing light, shifting seasons, and distinctive colours of the southern hemisphere became a source of wonder and artistic exploration.Through her paintings, Pei invites viewers to experience the rhythms of nature—the quiet conversations between maple and eucalyptus trees, the vitality of growth, and the beauty found in cycles of flourishing and renewal. Her works capture not only the landscape itself, but also the emotions and memories it evokes. The playful presence of Australia’s white cockatoos appears throughout her work, symbolising freedom, curiosity, and the harmonious relationship between people and the natural world. Their spirited personalities bring moments of joy and lightness to her compositions.Pei’s art also reflects on human connection. Created during a time when distance and separation became part of daily life, many of her works celebrate the enduring bonds of love, family, and community that continue to unite us.Blending sensitivity with observation, Pei reveals the subtle poetry within the landscapes of the southern hemisphere. Rich in colour, emotion, and atmosphere, her paintings offer a contemplative journey through nature, memory, and the shared human experience.
